It can be a goldmine of information for a student pilot or a
minefield of disinformation and tall tales. Discerning students learn to pick
and choose what and who to believe. Nether the less it is always useful to
listen to other people’s mistakes. It can save you from making them.
Traditionally the flying club has been the home of hanger talk, but
like many things aviation related, it has finally hit the modern era. I indulge
in as much hanger talk as previous generations of pilots, the difference is, lacking
a flying club to call home, most of mine takes place online.
The internet can be a fabulous place; I regularly exchange flying
thoughts with people in different countries and different hemispheres. I’ve had
complete strangers message me online because they wanted to know something about
flying in Toronto or other vagaries of Canadian airspace. I’ve found people who’ve
starred in my videos as “the other plane” and a couple of days ago made contact
with someone who has the audacity to fly in JES occasionally! How dare they,
that’s MY plane!
I’ve got a couple of coffee hangouts in the pipeline to actually
meet these people face to face. At the moment though we are content to swap
emails, stories and the occasional video. “Call that wake turbulence? Ha! I’ll
show you wake turbulence!!” and so on
All part of the fun ride that this flying stuff is turning out to
be.
